Howdy!! Beautiful world… Myself Monica. Today, at the age of 40, I am going to change my career path during the journey of my life.
I wanted to share my views in a few words, but, explaining someone’s life, that too when you are having a life experience of 40 years, is not as easy as it seems. In your life’s journey, when you have kids and a roller coaster, career experiences in different industries, you definitely have so much to share, especially when possessions are changing, and priorities are fluctuating.
Here I am with my first ever effort, unfolding me as a student, mother and as a fellow of this society. I belong to a conventional family where societal densities could change someone’s aspirations and put that person to hold back their dreams and notions. That set-up, where anyone would be an individual who reached super’s ‘career maturity’ but landed up in an “Unanticipated Transition”. This is because the taboos don’t allow you to chase what you want to turn into.
I had completed my education 25 years ago, but today, while guiding my daughter, I comprehended that I am not who I wanted to be. If I would have chosen some other venture, I might have been a more contented person. I could be more significant and useful for the society and could chase my mission, my passion and my dreams to be someone special, whom I could be proud of, but that societal burden did not allow me to pursue my passion. I was never good with numbers. My parents due to absence of Vocational construct system and controlled sources recommended me to elect commerce, as they themselves were also under the collective guidance and unfortunately, they didn’t come out from the perception that humanity stream is equally significant as science or commerce. No parent wants to make poor choices for their children, specifically when their child’s future is at stake, but I believe our society needs to be way more practical to understand self-actualized needs of any individual.
While counselling my daughter, she made me realise that I have the quality to help someone realise his or her dreams. If I can help her to find her passion and interest, from my own life experiences, then I can surely help someone who needs it more. I would love to serve in this field because; somewhere in my subconscious mind I knew where we entomb our desires.
Now, my on-going training helps me to setup my own career counselling center. I was quite worried if I should change my career or not? But I have comprehended that choices which I had made since my childhood till date were society driven and now it’s time for me to listen to my conscience.
I have realised that I can’t sit or hold back myself and let society affect anyone else’s passion anymore. I am and I will be helping children, as well as parents who are the sufferers of this evil societal pressures. Parents must know that their children are under the social and parental pressure.. If you are not going to know about the remedy, you would be afraid of the disease. So, being a career counsellor, I have to give the career options to the lovely families so that they can cure their child from that disease which is called “social pressure” and from a taboo which we actually created in the society.
Being a mother, I have observed many interests and passions my daughter has, but my self-image did not allow me to accept the creative person in her. I was having “dots” in my mind but I was afraid to join them. But being a friend, when I discussed it with her and tried to find out the options she can have in future, I, gradually but ultimately accepted her dreams. It forced me to then find options for her and this is what I would request to all the parents, that we need to first of all come in terms with what our children are aspiring for, and then also help them with good career guidance.
Career counseling is not going to change someone’s life it is just going to give them a clarity of thought. We should give our children the liberty of choosing their career paths and facilitate them with providing good guidance. By taking counselling session one can ensure to have a certain perspective towards life and to clear his/her doubts. Be sure to follow your instincts!! Follow your passion and success will follow!!
